For this years event there were 84 entrants - with 2 dropping out due to unforseen problems. Regatta day was the first in the start of daylight saving for 2006 and although overcast and a little chilly there was no rain. As the day progresses the weather warmed so that even in a breezy wind conditions were close to perfect.
The regatta was underway with the Putt Putt Challenge. Because of the strong breeze some of the entrants did not hear the air horn blast and missed the start of the challenge. A visual as well as a sound starting system will be in place next year. Apart from that it was very exciting, especially towards the finish line with the leader Todd Vidgen in Puddle experiencing engine trouble, this allowed Cliff Walton in ‘Gunna’ to pip him at the post with Arthur Farmer in ‘Indispensible’ a close third. The Challenge is a smaller course and a good lead up the main event.
It must be getting harder each year for the judges to pick a winner in the ‘Best Dressed’ and ‘Novelty’ categories as the entrants and their boats seem to be more meticulous with each one striving to improve on last years effort. Congratulation to the crew in ‘Cockle Queen’ for winning Best Dressed Crew Period Costume, the girls really stole the show looking an absolute picture in their early 1900’s costumes. John Carrick from Westmead, a regular visitor to the Regatta was this year’s winner of the Best Novelty Boat and Crew in his boat ‘Top Ha’t. He and his crew had really outdone themselves this year. What a spectacle, the multi-coloured boat with a huge top hat being lead by Phar Lap the seahorse. Thanks to all the teams who took the time and effort to enter these events - your participation adds a lot of interest to the Regatta.
The Rotary Club of Kincumber has once again done a brilliant job in organizing the on shore side of the Regatta. There were close to 100 different stalls, displays or kids things to keep everyone happy and amused. Many people were just sitting around having a bite to eat and enjoying the variety of entertainment that was on show.
The Main Event got off to a good start at 1130 and by now the clouds had all but disappeared and the sun was shining. What a great sight to see - 82 starters in all shapes and sizes taking off together , with the crews and their boats looking magnificent. The entire length of the waterfront was packed with spectators cheering and waving and generally having a great time. Everyone was impressed with the quality of the boats at the Regatta, and the distances that crews are traveling to join together in the celebration of the Putt Putt
Thanks to the NSW Maritime for the help not only on the day but also to the lead up of the Regatta. Also in attendance and doing a great job as always was the Central Coast Division of the RVCP and the Water Police. The continued support of the many sponsors ensures the success of the event - especially as the proceeds are distributed to charities and volunteer organisations. The date selected now seems to be the best one available and the 2007 Regatta will also be held on the last week-end in October - the first day of the new daylight saving period. |
